What is S2C
or Spelling to Communicate?
Spelling to Communicate is the method of using all 26 letters of the alphabet to develop a reliable, open form of communication for non, minimal and unreliable speakers through motor coaching an individual’s body to point to letters on a letter board, promoting synchrony between the cognitive and motor systems in those with autism, apraxia, and/or the inability to use speech as their reliable form of communication.
My “why”…
My journey into spelling began when I was sent a trailer of a new documentary about nonspeakers and how they spell in order to communicate their thoughts, ideas, hopes and dreams, not just their needs on a limited AAC iPad app. That documentary led to reading the Spellers Guidebook, taking the Live CRP Class through Spellers Method in order to begin spelling with my own nonspeaking, 6 year old autistic daughter. When I began to see the world and our lives change before my eyes once discovering Spelling, it became an unwavering passion for me to bring this practice to as many nonspeakers that I’m able to.
They are in there, and they want to be heard.

Any individual (ages 5 & up) who are autistic, have apraxia, or lack the ability to use verbal speech as their reliable form of communication.
-
Presuming competence in my practice is inspired by the article “Least Dangerous Assumption” by Jorgensen.
Each individual can learn, has the ability to learn, and has the desire to learn. It is less dangerous to presume competence by providing an individual with age appropriate content, under the assumption that they can and want to learn, rather than not providing the individual access to any age appropriate content at all.
